O-CodE Observatory of Digital Competence in Education
PDC2022-133436-I00
2022 - 2024
Given the importance of digital competence (DC) and its development from childhood with the aim of training citizens for the digital age, it is necessary to focus on teaching digital competence (TDC) and the didactic use of digital technologies in classrooms as a determining factor for the development of students' DC and the reduction of existing gaps, in terms of access and use, as for cognitive features. From this need arises our proposal to create a Digital Competence Observatory in Education (O-CodE) that offers information and training to the
educational community on TDC and the educational use of digital technologies in Spain; based on the work initiated in the Observ@COMDID project (RTI2018-096815-B-I00), of the 2018 call for I+D+i(R&D) projects "research challenges".
During the above-mentioned project, the theoretical bases of the Observatory were designed, collecting the data on the level of TDC and the didactic use of digital technologies from a sample infant, primary and secondary education in-service teachers in Spain, based on two designed and validated questionnaires; identifying a set of referred rehearsals(practices) with digital technologies. Furthermore, the ARGET research group has also worked on students DC from primary education thru higher education, gathering this data through different self-perceived evaluation questionnaires.

Creating a Digital Competence Observatory in Education (O-CodE) that offers information and training to the
educational community on TDC and the educational use of digital technologies in Spain
The proof of concept we introduce is based on the use of the described tools, as well as on the collected data through the questionnaires, which will be automatically processed, projecting the results on the Observatory website and offering training proposals to improve DC and personalized mentoring to improve teaching performance. Therefore, we proposed a development of innovation in three axes:
- In the first place, the TDC and DC data collection tools will offer users an individual and immediate feedback that will allow them to know different aspects on their DC and the use of the DT; as well as obtaining guidelines to improve it.
- Secondly, these tools will serve as a data source for the Observatory, processing data automatically and through artificial intelligence, making it easier to display a summary of the data on the web for further consultations. This data input will also allow the generation of customizable automatic reports for different types of target users, offering training opportunities and mentoring.
- Lastly, a space on the web will be created, where teachers can share their ducational resources and have them evaluated by experts in education, generating a living repository of referred rehearsals(practice) with digital technologies.
